Explore Guadeloupe, a French Caribbean island that played a key role during the Age of Great Discoveries (1492鈥1600)鈥攁 place that witnessed the 鈥渄estruction鈥 of its indigenous people and the arrival of an enslaved African workforce. Known as l鈥櫭甽e papillon (鈥淏utterfly Island鈥) for its shape, Guadeloupe is far more complex than its postcard image suggests. Beyond beaches, waterfalls, mangroves, coves, and La Soufri猫re volcano, its landscapes, literature, and languages bear traces of colonial history. Explore pre-Columbian sites at Trois-Rivi猫res and former sugarcane plantations and rum distilleries such as Bologne or Longueteau. Visit Les marches aux esclaves, the slave cemetery, and the M茅morial ACTe鈥攕ites inviting reflection on a past that continues to shape the island鈥檚 vibrant cultural identity.
